10 Scariest Roads In India That Are A Driver’s Nightmare

Roads and highways to get INR 97,000 crore boost, announced honorable Finance Minister Arun Jaitley as he presented the Budget 2016. With current roads in dilapidated state and numerous cases of death tolls on narrow roads with hairpin curves, we sure need better roads and highways.

Talking of the scariest roads in India, some routes are so bad that they can give chills to even the most seasoned drivers. The narrow roads, sharp turns, low hanging cliffs, and harsh climatic conditions can lead them to death bed, instead of the planned destination.

Besides bad maintenance, sometimes the very location of a road makes it a scary drive. Out of the many, we bring you a handpicked list of the scariest roads in India that have claimed many lives in the past. But still, some daring men might see an element of thrill in such drives. Have a look and decide which side are you on!

The narrow road amidst the snowclad mountains near Khardungla Pass that is the highest motorable road in the world

Where: Ladakh, on the Caravan Route that was once the Silk Route between India & China
What makes it scary: The road is scary for the sheer invincible height of 5,602 m above the sea level. Additionally, the road is not paved and is slippery due to the frozen ice & dirt mix. And then there are the hairpin turns that are nightmares of even the most experienced drivers of the region.

The multilevel zig-zag road near Zoji La Pass that is narrow and has many sharp curves

Where: 9 km from Sonamarg, between Ladakh and Kashmir
What makes it scary: The road, at an altitude of 3,538 m above sea level, is frightfully narrow and extremely slippery due to the year-round snow and dirt mix. The slippery road amidst the snowclad mountains near Chang La Pass

One of the narrow stretches with hairpin curves near Rohtang Pass on the Leh-Manali Road

Where: Leh – Manali Road, 53 km from Manali

The snow covered roads are prone to landslides, especially in regions that are enclosed with mountains on both sides.

An aerial view of the rock-cut narrow stretches of road near Nathula Pass

Where: Indo-Chinese border, 54 km east of Gangtok, near Tsomgo Lake, Sikkim
What makes it scary: The route is prone to landslides during monsoons and snow sludge in winters. Besides, the curved roads are slippery.

Where: Raigad District, Maharashtra – The road begins at Neral at an elevation of 40 m above sea level. The 8.9 km road takes you to Matheran, located at an elevation of 800 m above sea level.
What makes it scary: The average elevation gain is 8.5% per stretch, with a total gain of 760 m. The steep and narrow sections are followed by hairpin turns. Some of these sections are even without guard rails. To add to the woes of the drivers, rains make the roads slippery and may even cause landslides. However, the occurrence of landslides is very rare.

A snap of the dangerous Se La Pass in the Tawang district of Arunachal Pradesh

Where: Tawang District, Arunachal Pradesh – The road connects the Buddhist city of Tawang Town to Tezpur and Guwahati.
What makes it scary: The high mountain pass is located at an elevation of 4,170 m above the sea level. But its winding design, sharp turns, and slippery curves can be fatal. Moreover, the road is covered in snow for most of the year. This adds to the driving difficulty of the travelers. So it is suggested to drive really slow and not get lost in the panoramic views.

Striking morning hues as seen in Norwood Green homestay in Bundla tea estate Palampur

Bundla Tea Estate in Palampur is a comparatively less explored hideout, and that’s precisely why it is all the more lucrative for solo travelers and peace seekers. It is a good pick for couples as well. The most popular homestay in this estate is Norwood Green, which rose to fame after it featured in NDTV Good Times show Highway on my Plate hosted by Rocky and Mayur.

It is 100 reviews strong on TripAdvisor and rated a startling 5 on 5. Excellent cottages, homemade food, impeccable service, fabulous settings, splendid views – there is everything you need to forget the world and gaze at the beautiful panorama. See reviews.

4. Monasteries – Peace lovers’ haven

Inside Tabo monastery in Spiti along with barren mountains background

Inside Tabo monastery in Spiti along with barren mountains background

If the city seems crowded most of the times but you can still hear hills calling you through the Monday to Friday chaos, trust me – a short stay at any of the monasteries in Himachal will keep you calm for a long time.

Being light on the pocket is not the key highlight of the stay. It’s the aura, the vibe, the experience. Situated in the middle of nowhere, these monasteries are spiritual havens where even non-religious and atheists find peace. Happy monks, happier localites, warm chai, simple food, humbling peaks, and the rustic accommodation are all the beauty you see here. Capture it in your heart and camera and keep them as souvenirs.

But a major concern here is that there is a lot of confusion with respect to which monasteries welcome tourists for a stay. Going through a few forums and travelogues online, I could figure out 3 to 4 monasteries where you can stay.

RECOMMENDED MONASTERY ACCOMMODATIONS IN HIMACHAL

THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND – Before you head out, read recent reviews and travelogues; do not trust old travelogues or forums. When with monks, be like monks – make sure you do not disturb them. Do not expect mobile phone connectivity in these remote areas of Himachal.

5. Heritage hotels – Tryst with historic beauties

The Himalayas And Raw Natural Beauty: Our Honeymoon Trip To Sikkim Was Perfect

For most of us, a romantic dream-honeymoon destination is anywhere in the mountains. And when we think of mountains, it is usually Himachal or Uttarakhand. I wanted to explore a place we have never been to. I had heard of the untouched scenic beauty and charm of the North East, so we decided to head there for our honeymoon. Sikkim was our first choice as we had heard a lot about its scenic beauty. This is how the planning for our honeymoon trip to Sikkim – Darjeeling began. Gangtok and Darjeeling are unique in their own ways. Where Gangtok surrounds you with its mystical vibe, Darjeeling oozes colonial charm

I was looking for a dependable and good travel organizer and found TravelTriangle. It is an amazing online marketplace that provides a platform to the travelers and local agents of your desired destination to connect and design a customized holiday package for them. And the best part is that there are no middle agents so the packages are affordable and within budget.

We selected a customised package and were very excited about this romantic honeymoon trip to the mountains. TravelTriangle and its agents did a great job in making our journey hassle free, convenient and enjoyable.

Tshangu Lake Excursion – A Charming glacial lake

a highly exhilarating day

simply breathtaking view

peacefully resting in a valley

Thanks to the itinerary, we knew it from the very beginning that it is going to be a highly exhilarating day. Soon after a delicious breakfast we started off for the excursion to Tshangu Lake. The scenic views on the way were simply breathtaking. Riding through the roads winding around the mountains and sometimes piercing them is the best way to enjoy nature. And Tshangu Lake was even more spellbinding. This serene glacial lake peacefully resting in a valley with mountains in the backdrop looks picture perfect. The chilling weather made the whole experience very romantic. This place is a must visit on a honeymoon trip to Sikkim.

Tiger Hill – The most astonishing sunrise

a very romantic experience

best way to enjoy nature

scenic view of the waterfall

Gangtok was awesome and we were looking forward to exploring Darjeeling with excitement. We had to wake up early in the morning to catch the sunrise from the Tiger Hill. We reached there by 4 am to witness what can we called magic. When the sun slowly rises above the horizon, you start seeing Mount Everest and Mount Kanchenjunga. The two turn orangish as the sun shines upon them and make their snowcaps glitter. Watching a sunrise together is a very romantic experience.

Ghoom Monastery & Batasia Loop – Exploring the mystique & beauty

visiting to the monastrey

 a calming experience

had an intoxicating experience with nature

While returning from Tiger Hill, we visited the popular Ghoom Monastery. Built in 1850, this old monastery is beautifully maintained. The 15 feet-high statue of Maitreya Buddha is a major highlight of Ghoom Monastery. A morning visit to this Buddhist temple was a calming experience to both of us. We also visited the Batasia Loop on the way to our hotel. This spiral railway track laid through a tunnel and on a hilltop is a rare sight. The loop is lined by lush gardens on both sides, with a memorial Gorkha Soldiers of the Indian Army who lost their lives during the 1947 Indian Independence. The view of the mountains and clouds is lovely.

07 Points Tour – Covering all the major tourist attractions

lush green Tea plantations

exploring the attractions of the city

exploring the best sites of the city

Exploring the tea plantations in Darjeeling

We were very hungry after our early morning tour to Tiger Hill and two other attractions so we returned to the hotel. After having a hot and yummy breakfast, both of us were ready to further explore the Darjeeling city. Our 7 Points Tour took us through all the major tourist places to visit in Darjeeling, including The Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, PNZ Zoological Park Tenzing Rock, Tibetans Refugee Centre, Rope Way and Peace Pagoda. A refreshing visit to the lush green Tea plantations made our Darjeeling trip complete in the true sense. This tour covered all the major tourist points in the city, and we really enjoyed it. Our honeymoon was a power-packed trip and the best start to our new journey of life. The romantic memories that we’ve made here will be cherished for a lifetime.

Whether it’s the altitude, the pristine water or the charm of the surrounding landscape, there’s something remarkable about the sparkling lakes in Himachal Pradesh. There are hundreds of postcard-perfect lakes waiting to be explored in the densely crowded Indian state.

Wherever your travels through Himachal Pradesh take you, no visit is complete without a tour of the state’s most extraordinary lakes.

We have picked 7 famous lakes in Himachal Pradesh every traveler should make an effort to see. While some are suitable for swimming, make sure to check the weather and water conditions beforehand and heed all warning signs. Take a look and pick your next destination based on the lake it houses:

1. Khajjiar Lake

It got its name from Khajji Nag, the deity in the temple nearby. The highlight of this spot is the floating island, which is actually a bunch of grass growing on the lake’s surface — a beautiful sight to behold! Several backpackers trek to this lake to get their adrenaline fix.

From paragliding to horseback riding and zorbing, there are plenty of recreational activities worth pursuing. If you’re not an adventurous soul, you can simply lie back on the grass and admire the scenic vistas of Mount Kailash.

There is a round, floating island inside the lake, though it is unclear how deep it is. During summer, it floats away to one side of the lake and then slowly drifts towards the other by winter.

You don’t get to see a palace like this anywhere else in the world, where you feel like you are actually taking a look at the king’s lifestyle. Dolmabahce is a beautiful palace surrounded by sea on one side and land on another. Though palaces of such grandeur in terms of size and class can be found in many countries all around the world the beauty of Dolmabahce lies in the fact that it’s exactly the same even today. Every room in the palace has been preserved with the same furniture, upholstery and more than existed at Sultan’s time which made us feel the richness, luxury and grandeur even after so many years.

  • Plan your itinerary in advance as the domestic flight & hotel rates can go up.
  • When in Istanbul stay at Taksim so you’ll be near to the good places to eat & shop.
  • If you want to experience Hot air balloon ride, book it while booking the trip, the price goes up as the date approaches & there’s a lot of black marketing for the ride.
  • Try the Turkish ice cream for sure
  • Don’t buy anything from the factories that tour operators take you to, they are much more expensive than market rates.
